Keynote Address - Kids and Teachers Deserve It!
Kids Deserve It, and Teachers Deserve It too! It’s SO long overdue! Teachers need more celebration, they need more say in the decision making process and they deserve to know what the plan is! I’ve been so lucky in my educational career to have been a teacher, Principal, Director and now traveling the country working with educators on a weekly basis - I know that we can do more.

Creating opportunities for our teachers to be leaders in the building, that’s important! Allowing teachers to wear jeans to school so they don’t have to worry about dry cleaning bills and because jeans are comfortable and fun to wear!

• Teachers need more time in their day for planning and collaboration, so do kids!
• Teachers deserve to be viewed as experts - because they are, and so do kids!
• Teachers deserve a professional learning network that will support them, push them and be there when times are tough!
• And teachers deserve compliments. They’re simple, they’re easy, they’re free and they make a profound impact.

The Life FrameWork
The Life Framework (Lived Inclusive For Everyone) is a document released from the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta (CCSSA) on creating and operating student groups and activities that seek to promote student inclusion within the schools. The session will explore the Life Framework and the considerations and best practices in setting up a group within the school while remaining faithful to the fidelity of the Church Teachings. There will be an opportunity for questions in the session. Please consider adding the questions that you wish to have answered in the Google Form.

Emotional De-escalation in the Classroom (90 min)
This is a skills-based workshop which will teach you how to help someone quickly de-escalate an overwhelming emotion to return to a more rational, flexible and receptive state of mind. This workshop is especially useful for parents, teachers, administrators, and front-line workers who are confronted with the emotional dysregulation of others and aren't sure what to say or do to help the situation.

This workshop was developed by Dr. Adele Lafrance, who has a  PhD in Child and Clinical Psychology and is the co-director Mental Health Foundations. After working for many years with Canadian school boards as a psychologist, Adele developed this quick and effective de-escalation tool for teachers in direct response to their classroom needs as well as their feelings of professional burnout. Adele, who is based out of Ontario, has delivered the workshop countless times to parent groups, schools and police officers. Sue Huff has been authorized by Dr. Lafrance to deliver this workshop in Alberta.

Outcomes
At the conclusion, participants will have:
  • a quick strategy (<3 minutes) to de-escalate any intense emotion, in anyone, of any age or background
  • insight into what is happening in the brain when a person is flooded with emotion and why they can't learn, receive direction or support in this state
  • a deeper understanding of our own strengths and weaknesses when dealing with the emotion of others
  • access to additional resources, including free webinars to reinforce skills
  • the ability to role model this approach at work, at home and in the community, creating ripples of positive change around accepting and processing emotions

LD: Critical Concepts
This session provides insight into the neurodevelopmental basis of learning disabilities. The different sub-types of reading, writing and mathematics disabilities will be reviewed along with implications for remediation strategies. Literacy skills in typically developing students will be contrasted with skills development in students showing signs of learning disabilities/disorders. The impact of co-existing conditions like executive skills deficits, ADHD and anxiety will also be discussed. Teachers will gain a more complete understanding of LDs and their remediation, informed by current and emerging research.
How is this session related to teaching practices?
Based on current incidence levels from the National Institutes of Health, every classroom teacher will have approximately 3 students in their class with learning difficulties severe enough to be classified as a learning disability/disorder. Other students will demonstrate characteristics of learning disabilities; however, they may not present with deficits severe enough to quality as an LD. Every teacher in every classroom currently supports students with learning disabilities. Even with the high incidence of LDs, common myths persist about what LDs are and are not. These erroneous myths include things like, "dyslexia is simply flipping letters around" or "students with learning disabilities have lower full scale IQs." The failure to understand the scope and impact of learning disabilities impedes students from getting the support they need. It also affects teachers who genuinely wish to do the best they can for all students. This session will present practical and accessible information about the explosion of evidence based findings on learning disabilities that has emerged in the last 10 years.

Surface Dyslexia: The Uncommon Reading Disability
Most reading disabilities are the result of poor phonological and phonemic awareness, specifically deficits in making a sound to symbol or symbol to sound connection. Surface dyslexia is different. Students with surface dyslexia may be good at decoding, but struggle to achieve a fluency rate suitable to facilitate comprehension. Signs of surface dyslexia in beginning readers are easy to miss and may not be uncovered by early identification screening tools. This presentation will focus on the identification of surface dyslexia and its characteristics.
How is this session related to teaching practices?
Surface dyslexia has commonly been referred to as a stealth or hidden reading disability. Unlike students who present with the more common type of reading disability known as dysphonetic dyslexia subtype, students with surface dyslexia may initially appear to be excellent readers with excellent decoding skills. However, their growth as readers seems to stall or plateau as they end grade 2. They may often compensate with excellent working memory, verbal skills and auditory comprehension. The extent of their reading difficulties are missed as they struggle to become fluent enough readers to comprehend the text that they are reading. These students often fall through the cracks, even though many are intellectually gifted. Moreover, the standard supports for students with reading difficulties focus on developing phonological and phonemic awareness skills -- skills the surface dyslexic student have already mastered. This session will provide teachers with strategies to identify students with surface dyslexia characteristics, along with some classroom based options for remediation and support.

Word Inquiry: developing word noticers and word knowers
Have you often felt you should do more to strengthen students’ vocabulary than present a list of words relevant to your current topic? And have you ever found yourself telling students to sound out words they are trying to spell or read only to realise they can’t be sounded out?
An added challenge is that traditional ways of supporting vocabulary growth, decoding and spelling skills are often compartmentalized and don’t utilise 21st-century teaching approaches. Fortunately, once you know more about the structure of written English at the word level, you can equip your students with skills to independently access the meaning of unfamiliar words and see links between words, thus deepening their understanding of English whilst enhancing their ability to think critically and problem solve.
Word Inquiry uses an inquiry-based approach to uncover the logic of English orthography. As you learn to guide your students to analyze, synthesize and find relationships among words you help them build a bank of tools and strategies they can apply independently, giving them greater control of their language, literacy and thinking skills.

This workshop is suitable for those brand new to Word Inquiry and those who are experienced with this instructional approach and want to deepen their understanding.
